Hey loves! Here's a quick & easy tutorial to give your existing closet some flavor. Coated denim is such a great item to have in your arsenal. It gives the look of leather, fit of jeans (because they are jeans, haha), and they're transitional -- meaning can go from day to night with ease. Wait why am I "selling" the idea...YOU'RE ALREADY INTERESTED! Let's get started!
You will need...
You will need...
- A large work area -- covering items close by with a drop cloth or large cut trash bags would be wise.
- Some old (pre-washed) jeans (no fabric softener). DON'T GO AND BUY NEW JEANS...and if you do -- THRIFT. Cost efficiency is key.
- Puff or dimensional fabric paint (Yes, I think you should get the bigger bottle...)
- Wide paint brush or foam paint brush -- the design of your paint strokes are based on the brush you get -- if you get a foam brush, each paint stroke will be about 60-80% covering the fabric. If you're trying to achieve brushstrokes, get a large brush with long/thicker bristles -- something like a paintbrush from a hardware store.
- An old rag -- just in case things get messy..
- A plate to pour the paint onto
- A cup of water to clean the brush periodically between dryings
- Plastic grocery bags -- I'll tell you why in a second..
- A pair of gloves (optional..they may get in the way)
Onto the tutorial.. (see pictures below)
- Prepare your area -- make sure that everything you wouldn't want paint on is covered or put away. I don't know how but the paint always finds itself on something it shouldn't be on..your shirt...your phone...people nearby...idk..just put everything away...
- Lay your jeans out flat and add the plastic grocery bags in the legs of the jeans, this will help the front from sticking to the back just in case you get a little heavy-handed with the paint.
- Shake the paint then pour (or squeeze out) the puff paint onto the plate
- Carefully dip the brush into the paint and start painting your jeans -- IN ONE DIRECTION.
- Once you finished the front, allow it to dry -- it usually takes about 15-20 minutes, but use your discretion -- if you've used a lot of paint to coat it, don't expect it to be dry in 15-20 minutes.
- When the front is dry, flip the jeans over and repeat steps 4 & 5.
- Repeat if necessary (only if they don't look "coated" enough")
- Let the jeans dry for about 3-4 hours and VOILA! COATED DENIM! I knew you could do it!
